Student-Athlete Date Auction

So April 29th there is a student-athlete date auction to benefit the Red Cross Heroes Campaign. I am pretty nervous about it because my golf team volunteered me to be the ‘golf girl’ in the auction.

I really hope people bid on me cause that would be awful if they didn’t. I also hope a lot of people come. This is the FIRST ANNUAL time athletics has done this. I think we will have a good turn out. After all, who wouldn’t mind bidding on various athletic ‘hotties’!

Today I am going to take my headshot for the marketing posters that are going to be around campus. How exciting!

Creating Video Presentations

Please Speak Efficiently

I started doing our blog assignment, but then ended up writing a rant about how wordiness is absolutely awful. My advice to everyone is to please speak efficiently.

Off the top of my head, I can give you three examples of how wordiness is awful:
• “You look very pretty. I mean, not that you do not always look pretty. It is just that today you look pretty, but you look pretty every day. I just felt like saying you look pretty…. (And so on. The moral is: Keep your sentences short and sweet. The message will come across just fine.)
• Emailing your professor phrases like: “Upon your request “and “I would be honored”. (Do not lie. These are simply beat-around-the-bush phrases. Plain English is much more upfront!)
• Explaining the inevitable, for example: “This story may bore you, and you cannot turn your ears off, so you have to listen to me.” (This is probably automatically going to make me roll my eyes at you. If anything, just tell me the story so we can get it over with.)

I think we have all heard that “time is money”. Wasting my time, telling me nonsense, is definitely a pet peeve of mine.

Plain Language Assignment

We talked a little in class about the Plain Language Initiative and so this week let’s discuss this issue. Read the case at the end of Chapter 4, but do not complete the assignments. Google “Plain Language” and investigate some of the sites, especially Wikipedia and the PLAIN website. Then, tell us what you think in about 250-300 words by Friday, March 14, 2010. Enjoy!!

A Monday Night

This guy in my english class asked me to be his date for a date party for his fraternity. It was pretty funny because, even after the party, I don’t know the name of the frat. Either way, they had a party on a Monday night. Isn’t that weird? Well, in my opinion it is. I got there and thought it was lame so I had a housemate come pick me up and then we laughed about the situation with my date I barely knew.
During the date party, if for a second I was not smiling, the guy would ask me if something is wrong. Thanks for caring, but no thanks. I am fine and you don’t need to worry about me and ask me dumb questions like that. I had a good time while I was there, but I also know when to call it quits and leave.

Some guy at this Monday-Night-Date-Party-Thing spilled his drink all over my furry boots so I had to take them off. The boys in our house really love taco bell. As a result, later in the night, I went with my housemates to taco bell with barefeet. I kinda waltzed into taco bell and sat at a booth before the workers saw me.

It was a fun night, but I really never would have imagined myself going out on a Monday. I still feel weird about it.

Week 5 Blog Assignment

This week’s assignment is about appealing to different types of audiences. Here is an excerpt from the class blog page.

You have been hired by the admissions department at The University of Southern Mississippi as a college recruiter. You job duties include going out and making presentations to groups of potential new Eagles. For each of the following 4 groups, discuss in your post some of the topics you might need to cover in your presentation. In other words, based on the groups below, what are those students (and possibly their parents) going to be most interested in, or attracted by at USM.

1) A group of high school students from Catholic schools in New Orleans held at night at Tulane University.

2) A group of second-year students at local community colleges who have come to campus for a tour and visit.

3) A group of disadvantaged city high school students in Jackson, who have been gathered at the Convention Center during school hours for a “College Day”.

4) A group of new army basic training graduates presented at Camp Shelby.
